The FTSE 250 low-cost airline said that starting 2 June 2025, it would operate daily flights on the route, marking a significant expansion in its long-haul capabilities.

It said the over-seven-hour flight would provide passengers with a more affordable option, with Wizz Air claiming its fares to be 70% lower than current competitors.

The decision to base the Airbus A321XLR in Milan reflected Wizz Air’s strategy to bolster its Italian network while benefiting from the aircraft’s extended range and fuel efficiency.

It added that the new service highlighted the potential for further intercontinental expansion using the A321XLR.

“The Airbus A321XLR is the most cost-efficient aircraft of its class and, given the enhanced range capability, it enables Wizz Air to connect the furthest destinations in its network and further expand it, connecting cultures and continents,” said Wizz Air chief executive officer József Váradi at a press conference in Milan.

“We're excited to unlock unbeatable fares for our customers on the newly announced route to Abu Dhabi, while offering the most sustainable option for flying.

“We are already flying several five-to-six hour long ultra-low-cost routes with great satisfaction to our customers, and the XLR will extend our outstanding value proposition to seven-to-eight-hour long flights.”

At 1042 BST, shares in Wizz Air Holdings were down 1.84% at 1,228p.
