Officers responded to a call at about 0640 local time where they found a 50-year-old Thompson, who headed one of the country's biggest health insurers, shot in the chest. He was transported to Mount Sinai West hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Police are still searching for the gunman. The attack happened during the annual investor conference for parent company UnitedHealth Group in New York City.

Thompson had arrived early to prepare, according to people familiar with the investigation, the NYT added. The gunman apparently knew which door Thompson was going to enter and shot him several times from mere feet away, then fled. The gunman, the people said, ran, jumped on a bicycle and pedaled away.
