Wall Street stocks were firmly in the red early on Monday amid fears of a potential recession.

As of 1530 GMT, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 0.84% at 42,442.93, while the S&P 500 lost 1.91% to 5,660.13 and the Nasdaq Composite came out the gate 3.28% weaker at 17,599.44.

The Dow opened 358.79 points lower on Monday, more than reversing gains recorded in the previous session.

Stocks headed south after Donald Trump said on Sunday that the US economy was going through "a period of transition" when he was asked a question regarding the possibility of a recession due to newly implemented White House tariffs.

Tech giants Tesla, Alphabet, Meta and Nvidia all traded lower, while JPMorgan Chase, Citigroup, Wells Fargo, Bank of America, Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs were all under pressure early on Monday.

While the macro docket was empty on Monday, market participants will be looking ahead to February's consumer price index report on Wednesday and Thursday's producer price index.
