Shares in Smith & Nephew jumped 7% after the medical devices specialist posted improved first-quarter sales and reaffirmed its full-year outlook. Revenues came in at $1.41bn, up 1.6%, or 3.1% once the impact of currency fluctuations were stripped out.

Also 5% higher was GSK after shrugging off the potential impact of tariffs and maintaining its full-year outlook, following a strong start to the year. The blue chip drugs giant said total sales rose 2% in the first quarter, or by 4% on a constant currency basis, to £7.52bn.

Bottling company Coca-Cola HBC also reported better-than-expected first-quarter organic revenue growth, driven by strong demand in emerging markets, causing the stop to gain 3%.

Glencore dropped 9% after a sharp decline in copper production during the first quarter. Nevertheless, output of cobalt and steelmaking coal rose strongly, supported by higher grades and recent acquisitions.

Other miners, including Antofagasta, Anglo American and Rio Tinto, were also falling, along with banking stocks Lloyds, HSBC and Natwest.

Even Barclays was in the red, down 3% despite beating profit forecasts in the first quarter with a 19% increase year-on-year in pre-tax earnings. The bank did, however, lift bad loan provisions in response to macroeconomic uncertainty in the US.

Taylor Wimpey fell 2% even after saying its spring selling season was progressing well, leaving it on track to meet full-year forecasts. Net private sales for the year to 27 April were 0.77 per outlet per week, compared to 0.74 a year previously. The cancellation rate rose to 16% from 13%, however.
