Hence the sharp gains on offer in shares market heavyweight HSBC, which is Asia-focused.

Shell meanwhile jumped on the back of its better-than-expected first quarter results and news of a fresh $3.5bn share buyback authorisation.

IAG was another of the top performers, benefitting from improved risk appetite following the release of an in line reading - when revisions are taken into account - on US non-farm payroll growth during the month of April.

Going the other way, grocers, utilities and telecoms were at the bottom of the pile, alongside a conspicuous Lloyds, as 10-year Gilt yields moved back into the green after the latest US jobs numbers.
