At the close, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was 0.08% lower at 44,911.82, while the S&P 500 shed 0.01% to 6,449.15 and the Nasdaq Composite advanced 0.03% to 21,629.77.
The Dow closed 34.30 points lower on Monday, almost reversing modest gains recorded in the previous session.
The Federal Reserve will remain in focus this week, with policymakers set to head to Jackson Hole for the annual economic symposium. Investors will be watching closely for any signals on the future direction of interest rates. Futures markets now appear to be pricing in an almost 85% chance of a rate cut at the central bank's September meeting.
On the macro front, the National Association of Home Builders/Wells Fargo housing market index edged down to 32 in August from 33 in July, missing market expectations of an increase to 34. Current sales conditions dropped one point to 35, while sales expectations in the next six months held steady at 43.
No major corporate earnings were slated for release on Monday, but big-box retailers, Home Depot, Lowe's, Walmart and Target will all release their latest quarterly figures before the end of the week.
