As of 1515 GMT, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 0.26% at 47,939.65, while the S&P 500 advanced 0.35% to 6,869.35, and the Nasdaq Composite came out of the gate 0.90% firmer at 23,452.07.

The Dow opened 123.64 points lower on Friday, extending losses recorded in the previous session as the blue-chip index wrapped up what was a solid year on a dour note.

Nvidia traded higher early on Friday, as did Apple and Alphabet, as investors continued to back the artificial intelligence trade, which drove the broader market to sharp gains in 2025. Tesla was also in the green despite the electric carmaker posting Q4 delivered that fell short of analyst estimates.

On the macro front, S&P Global's manufacturing purchasing managers index fell to 51.80 in December, down from 52.20 in November, marking the weakest expansion in the last five months. New orders fell for the first time in twelve months, while exports dropped for a seventh month in a row, as tariffs and trade tensions weighed on sentiment.

No corporate earnings were slated for release on Friday.
