According to Sky News, Mitie is working with Egon Zehnder International to select a new boss for the company.

Sources told Sky on Thursday that Bentley was expected to step down in the spring of next year. They said both internal and external candidates are being considered for the role.

Bentley, a former boss of British Gas and Cable & Wireless Communications, is among the longest-serving bosses in the FTSE 350 ranks of Britain's biggest public companies.

Mitie said in a statement: "It has always been Phil’s intention to retire at the end of the current 3-year plan (FY25-27) when he will be 68.

"This timeline has been part of regular conversations with shareholders since Summer 2024. Mitie has made significant progress over the past nine years, and we are confident we will appoint a strong successor to continue the Mitie story. Planning for a smooth leadership transition is under way."
