At the close, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 0.44% at 47,710.22, while the S&P 500 advanced 0.75% to 6,790.90 and the Nasdaq Composite saw out the session 1.38% firmer at 22,695.95.
The Dow closed 208.67 points lower on Monday, taking a bite out of losses recorded in the previous session.
Stocks closed higher after Trump said "the war is very complete, pretty much", claiming Iran now had "no navy, no communications" and "no Air Force", and said the US was "very far" ahead of his initial four‑to‑five‑week timeline. He also said ships were moving through the Strait of Hormuz again and that he was "thinking about taking it over".
Crude prices, which had surged above $100 a barrel in overnight trading and briefly topped $119 for the first time since 2022, pulled back sharply following the remarks. West Texas Intermediate fell as low as $81 a barrel, while Brent eased towards $84.
The earlier spike came after major Middle East producers slashed output amid the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, with Kuwait confirming cuts and Iraq's production reportedly down by around 70%. G7 energy ministers will meet virtually on Tuesday to discuss a potential release of strategic reserves.
Many on Wall Street viewed $100 oil as a potential breaking point for the economy unless the conflict cools and prices retreat, but Trump had said on Sunday that a rise in "short term oil prices" was a "very small price to pay" for eliminating what he described as Iran's nuclear threat.
Treasuries also fell on the news, with the yield on the benchmark 10-year note down more than three basis points at 4.100%, while its three-year counterpart was nearly two basis points lower at 3.564%.
In the corporate space, Hewlett Packard Enterprise said second‑quarter revenues would come in ahead of Wall Street expectations, pointing to rising demand for its artificial‑intelligence‑driven server portfolio.
Hewlett Packard said revenue rose 18% to $9.30bn in the three months ended 31 January, just shy of the $9.33bn analysts had expected, while adjusted earnings per share came in at $0.65, comfortably ahead of forecasts of $0.59. HPE now expects fiscal 2026 adjusted EPS of $2.30 to $2.50, up from a prior $2.25 to $2.45 range.
No major data points were released on Monday.
