The company revealed on Thursday that its data centres worldwide used 2.5bn gallons in 2025, a 2% fall from the previous year, despite its data centre footprint growing.

Amazon claims that its data centres are seven times more water-efficient than the industry average, using air cooling technology for most of the year and water only during the hottest days.

Its data centres used 0.12 litres of water per kilowatt-hour (L/kWh) in 2025, compared with the industry average of 0.84 L/kWh.

For every four gallons of water used by the data centres, Amazon returned three gallons of water back to the communities where it operates. By the end of the decade, the company wants to be able to return more than a gallon for every gallon used.

Part of that effort involves using reclaimed water – something it claims to do more than any other company.

Amazon.com shares were down 0.5% at $236.86 by 1652 BST.
