Hospitality investor Luke Johnson is in talks to acquire Wahaca after an auction process for the Mexican restaurant chain, The Times reported.
Wahaca, which operates 14 sites across the UK, has been working with advisers at BDO in recent months to secure a new owner. Several parties are said to have examined the business, but Johnson - a former Pizza Express chairman and one of the sector's best‑known investors - is now understood to be the frontrunner, with discussions said to be at an advanced stage.
Britain is now generating more than £1bn a year from its digital services tax, even as the threat of retaliation from US president Donald Trump grows, The Telegraph reported.
HMRC expects to have collected £1.1bn from the levy in the last financial year, marking the first time the bill has exceeded £1bn. Trump has recently threatened 100% tariffs on countries imposing tech taxes, which are largely paid by US companies.
The DST applies a 2% charge on UK revenues earned by large search engines, online marketplaces and social‑media platforms. Rapid growth in the tech sector has pushed receipts up sharply from £358m when the tax was introduced in 2020.
Asda has been accused of putting workers and customers at risk after hundreds of security roles were placed under threat, The Telegraph reported.
Mitie, which provides outsourced security services to the debt‑laden supermarket, has put more than 300 guards into redundancy consultation despite rising levels of shoplifting and violent incidents across UK retail.
In a letter to Mitie chief executive Phil Bentley and Asda chairman Allan Leighton, the GMB union warned the cuts could undermine customer safety and worsen the "unacceptable" levels of violence and abuse faced by retail staff. The union said colleague safety "must not be compromised in pursuit of operational or cost‑saving objectives".
Carbon emissions from Microsoft, Amazon and Google rose by nearly a fifth over the past year, driven largely by datacentre construction, The Guardian reported.
In the financial year to March 2026, the three companies emitted 119m tonnes of CO2 equivalent, roughly a third of France's annual emissions. The previous year's total was around 101m tonnes, similar to Czechia's 2024 output.
The surge reflects booming demand for cloud services and AI‑related computing power, which has forced the companies to expand datacentre capacity despite their climate commitments.
Donald Trump said the US military would "decimate and destroy all areas of Iran" if he were assassinated, according to The Independent.
In comments posted late on Friday, Trump said he had "left instructions" in the event of his death, following reports of an Iranian assassination plot and threatening messages seen at Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's funeral.
US officials are also demanding Iran publicly confirm the Strait of Hormuz remains open and commit to halting attacks on passing vessels. Trump agreed to return to negotiations with Tehran but insisted the US‑Iran ceasefire had ended after both sides exchanged strikes this week.
