The company said in a statement that it will place 710m new ordinary shares to investors outside of the US at HK$112.70 each - an 8% discount to Friday’s closing share price. The placing is expected to close on Wednesday.
"Alibaba intends to use 100% of the net proceeds from the equity placement to invest in its full stack AI capabilities, including to expand and enhance its AI infrastructure," it said.
Charu Chanana, chief investment strategist at Saxo Markets, said the need for more AI funding isn’t a huge surprise given how aggressively Alibaba has been building compute capacity, but the size of the equity raise is significant. She said there will be some pressure on the share price in the near term but it’s not purely negative.
Chanana said the book was reportedly oversubscribed with strong institutional and sovereign-wealth-fund demand, which should soften some of the dilution concern.
The bigger question is how Alibaba monetises this spend especially with Chinese consumer still weak and competition in China’s AI market intense, Chanana added.
