The agreement will see the three companies assess how their combined technological expertise and industrial capabilities could contribute to the development of a satellite communications system designed to strengthen Greece's national security and strategic independence.

Thales Alenia Space, a joint venture between French defence group Thales and Italy's Leonardo, would provide expertise in secure telecommunications satellites and ground infrastructure, while Metlen would contribute through its M Technologies division.

The partnership could also see the potential use of Metlen's gallium production capabilities in supply chains for future Thales Alenia Space satellites supplied to customers worldwide. Gallium is a critical raw material used in advanced semiconductors and satellite technologies.

The proposed satellite system would use existing, proven technologies to provide Greece with secure communications resistant to electronic jamming.

The companies said the partnership would also support the development of Greece's domestic space industry through technology transfer, skills development and greater participation by local businesses.

No financial details were disclosed, and the agreement remains at an exploratory stage, with no firm contract announced for the satellite programme.

Metlen shares were up 0.2% at €48.84 by 1008 BST.
