Defensive utility stocks were among the best performers, with National Grid, Severn Trent and SSE all higher.
On the downside, Chilean copper miner Antofagasta was the worst performer on the index, while Rio Tinto also fell as copper prices eased. Antofagasta was also hit by a broker note from Citi, which cut its price target on the buy-rated stock to 4,100p from 4,400p.
Separately, Oddo BHF cut its price target on outperform-rated Rio Tinto to 6,500p from 6,700p.
