The US firm saw revenues rise 10% revenues in the three months to 30 September to $14.8bn, modestly ahead of forecasts for $14.7bn, with trips up 16% at $4.1bn and gross bookings 20% stronger at $59.8bn.

But diluted earnings per share tumbled 92% to $0.25, primarily due to a $476m net loss following revaluations of Uber’s equity investments. Net income from operations was ahead 30% at $1.1bn.

Looking to the fourth quarter, and Uber forecast gross bookings between $63.25bn and $65.25bn, and EPS of between $0.95 and $0.99. That was below estimates for $1.06 per share, according to Reuters.

Chief executive Dara Khosrowshahi also told analysts that elevated fuel prices and tighter driver availability had weighed on supply growth in several international markets during the period.

However, that did not stop the shares gaining ground, and by 1600 GMT they had put on nearly 8%.

In a statement, Khosrowshahi said there had been "record" audience and consumer engagement during the quarter. "We’re investing from a position of strength to expand mobility supply, build on delivery’s momentum and deepen engagement across our platform."

Khosrowshahi added that the company’s move toward autonomous cars was continuing, with around 700 fully driverless vehicles expected on Uber by the year-end, and over 2,000 in 2027.

He concluded: "Our fourth-quarter outlook reinforces our confidence in the durability of our financial model as we enter 2027. We remain disciplined in capital allocation, maintaining a high bar for investments in our core businesses and autonomy to drive Uber’s next phase of growth."
