Analysts at UBS were forecasting a gain of 237,000 people, following a reading of 157,000 for July, as the impact from the 31,500 layoffs at Toysrus washed out of the data.
Nevertheless, the imposition of tariffs in September was expected to lead to slower growth in employment over the fourth quarter of 2018, with the average rate of monthly increases settling at just above 150,000, the Swiss broker said.
However, international trade concerns won't be far from traders' minds, with a deal between Canada and the US possible over the weekend and with the consultation period for the next set of American tariffs, on $200bn-worth of Chinese goods, set to end next Friday.
That may very well keep a lid on investor sentiment throughout the week.
Back in the UK, the focus will be on Tuesday's testimony on the last Inflation Report by Bank of England Governor Mark Carney before the Treasury Select Committee.
Before that, on Monday, IHS Markit will release its factory sector Purchasing Managers' Index for the UK referencing the month of August.
It will arrive close on the heels of another key piece of data, Caixin's China manufacturing sector PMI.
To take note of, on Tuesday the central banks of Australia and Canada are set to announce their latest decision on interest rates.
