According to CNBC, the shares had a value of $963.2m, with the chief executive officer’s sale coming after he sold $9.85bn of Tesla shares in November.

Some of those shares were sold to meet tax obligations on a previous exercise of stock options, CNBC added.

The world’s richest man courted controversy by putting the future of some of his Tesla holdings in the hands of his Twitter followers, asking whether he should sell 10% of his Tesla stock.

57.9% of the more-than-3.5 million votes on the poll said he should, with the billionaire selling $6.9bn worth of stock in that week.

It was previously reported that Musk would need to sell a large chunk of his Tesla shareholding this quarter, regardless of social media polls, given he was facing a tax bill of over $15bn.

Following the latest sale, Tesla’s shares were down 0.68% in pre-market trading on the Nasdaq on Friday.
