Gold miner Petropavlovsk, which has operations in Russia, was the worst performer on the index amid worries about the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. There had been hopes of a resolution earlier in the session after it emerged that US President Biden had agreed in principle to hold a summit with Russian president Putin over Ukraine.

However, these were quickly dashed after Moscow said there were no firm plans in place for a summit.

Going the other way, Goldman Sachs investment vehicle Petershill Partners was the standout gainer on the index, closely followed by fund management services provider JTC.
